Moving is a tricky business. For some, it’s hard to let go of personal possessions and for others, purging is second nature. No matter which kind of person you are, there are essential items you’ll be glad to hold on to in a move from your old home to your new apartment. And if you don’t already own these household must-haves, these are some basics to acquire for your new home.
Key rack – Keys are quite possibly the easiest things to lose, but with a key rack located in the entryway of your new apartment, you’ll always know where to find them.
Tool box – You’ll find during the moving-in process that tools like tape measure, screw drivers and wrenches will come in handy for measuring and assembling new furniture. Investing in a good tool box will provide you with all the tools you’ll need for a long time to come and is worth the price.
Kitchen Basics – When stocking your new apartment, you’ll definitely want to have kitchen utensils to use right off the bat, because everyone’s got to eat! Make sure to have silverware, bowls, plates, glasses at least one good pot and one good knife to start with, and build from there.
Noise machine – Noise machines have been proven to be therapeutic and effective methods of drowning out outside, distracting noise. Smart phones also have sound machine apps that are useful if unwanted noise is keeping you awake at night.
Art – To make your new space feel more like your own while you’re getting settled in, bring a piece of art or personal decoration to put up as inspiration during the unpacking process.

This October, residents of the Greater New Orleans area which includes 1st Lake’s apartments in Metairie, Kenner and River Ridge have the opportunity to attend a fabulous party for a great cause.
1st Lake Properties is proud to present East Jefferson General Hospital’s Up on the Roof event on Friday, October 18. This will be the seventh annual event in this EJGH series and aims to outdo last year’s 1,500 guests that contributed to over $135,000 raised for quality healthcare in the community. The money goes to fund specialized patient care, advanced technology and capital expansion projects for EJGH through INSPIRE, their competitive grants fund. Since 2006, the foundation has granted over $3.8 million to obtain new cancer fighting technologies, new ambulances, and the expansion of the EJGH cancer infusion center.
Up on the Roof is held on the roof of EJGH and will offer dozens of local, national and international beers for attendees to sample, as well as food from great local restaurants. As a thank you to the Up on the Roof sponsors, a patron party will precede the main event at 6:00 p.m. Up on the Roof is open to the public starting at 7:00 p.m. going to 10:0 p.m. and tickets are $45 in advance or $55 at the door.
Besides an extensive selection of craft brews, delicious local food and beautiful, scenic rooftop views, partygoers will be able to enjoy live music performed by The Boogie Men. All this fun combined with an important fundraiser will make for an unforgettable night that’s not to be missed. Get your tickets to Up on the Roof today!

One way to enhance the look of your apartment, make it feel welcoming and cozy and add some personality to it is to use rugs. Rugs may not sound that exciting, but they can do wonders for pulling together the look in your apartment and make it seem bigger. There are different types of rugs that can be used for different purposes and a ton of different attractive patterns to choose from that can be found at an affordable price.
Area rugs: Area rugs are used to cover a larger floor space, acting as carpet without the commitment. Area rugs are intended for common use and to be walked on regularly. They are especially useful for covering up if you’re not partial to the flooring in a certain room.
Accent rugs: Accent rugs are smaller rugs that are meant to be a base placed under a piece of furniture like a coffee table or secretary desk. These rugs can add a pop of color or cool design to an otherwise ordinary room. Accent rugs are typically more square-shaped than area rugs which are more rectangular depending on the dimensions of the room it’s used for.
Runner rugs: Runner rugs are great to place in hallways. Runners are longer and narrower than area or accent rugs.
You don’t have to spend a fortune on rugs for your apartment. Apartment Therapy has many great suggestions for cheap rugs that are large, nice looking and high quality under $300.
