New shopping and dining options are coming to Metairie in the Elmwood Shopping Plaza. These new additions will make 1st Lake’s nearby apartments in Metairie, River Ridge and Kenner more attractive to live than ever!
The massive 65,000 square foot expansion in the popular River Ridge shopping center includes three new buildings – one focused on women’s wear and two for exciting new restaurants. The building on the north side of the main entrance dedicated primarily to women’s retail will house DSW (Designer Shoe Warehouse), Ulta Cosmetics, Charming Charlie’s and Kay Jewelers among other women’s clothing, jewelry and accessory stores. The new dining options will include Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Zoe’s Kitchen, Theo’s Pizza, Pinkberry Frozen Yogurt and Chipotle Mexican Grill among others.
This new construction comes off the heels of the extensive widening of the Huey P. Long Bridge that connects 1st Lake’s Metairie apartments with the Mandeville, Slidell and Covington apartments on the Northshore. Once the bridge is completed in 2013, it will ease the traffic flow and allow easy and quick access to the shopping center, especially for visitors coming from the West Bank and Northshore.
Also new to the area on Veterans Blvd. between Transcontinental Dr. and Clearview Pkwy. are even more delicious dining options, including Panera Bread, Bonefish Grill, Pei Wei and Coyote Blues.

You know you’ve crossed over into adulthood when you get excited about buying new furniture – and you should be! Making your new apartment look and feel like home is always a fun step forward. Before you go on a wild shopping spree, there are a few things to do first to ensure you make the right furniture decisions.
Looking to buy new furniture for your new apartment at 1st Lake? See steps one through five below:
Before you buy that couch you’ve had your eye on, make sure it fits right in your living room. There’s nothing more disappointing than buying a coveted piece of furniture you’ll have to return. Measure the walls and floor space where you want to place your new furniture so you’ll have the right dimensions.
What your apartment looks like in the morning, may look significantly different at night or mid afternoon. Before purchasing new furniture, take a second and a third look to visualize how your furniture will compliment your living space at different times of day.
Now for the fun part – choosing your color palette and design style! Do you want earth tones, bright colors, pastels…the options are limitless. Decide on a motif or theme for your interior design that expresses your taste. Are you modern and minimalist, funky and vintage or ornate and Victorian? Have this in mind before you go shopping so you can make fast, confident choices.
Picking a spot for your new furniture is just as important as picking the actual furniture out, and definitely should be done before making the purchase. Where your furniture will go will determine what size and type of furniture you select. Contact a 1st Lake Properties leasing consultant to get a copy of your apartment floor plan. Then place your future furniture where couches, chairs, chests, desks, etc. should go on the floor plan of your apartment.
Once you’ve completed steps one through four, you’re ready to shop! Make the largest, necessity pieces your first priority, like couches and beds, and then work your way down to the smaller, decorative pieces like nightstands and coffee tables. Happy shopping!

Congratulations! You’ve found a great apartment to call your new home. Now, here comes the fun part: actually making it your new home. Before you even move in, here are six steps to take to ensure the smoothest transition possible. Haven’t a new place to call home yet? 1st Lake Properties has many available New Orleans apartments for rent!
Now that you’ve decided on an apartment and put a deposit down, it’s time to start mentally preparing to move in. Make sure to have a camera phone or digital camera when you go to view the apartment. Start mapping out what the different rooms will be used for and where you want furniture to go.
If you want to take it to the next level, put the pictures up on a poster board and label your new setup with a sharpie to really visualize it before moving in. Need some inspiration? Check out the 1st Lake apartments for rent in Metairie!
It’s better to turn on your electric before you move in rather than dealing with it while you’re moving in. Most communities provide water so check with the leasing staff. Make sure you have your power, water, cable and Internet if you need it. This will expedite the physical moving process!
Once you’re unpacking, you will probably find the need for some basic carpenter’s tools like measuring tape, a hammer, screwdriver, nails, scissors, etc. Have a basic tool kit prepared for the move so you don’t have to make a run to the store each time you need something.
Unless you have valuable or sentimental silverware you don’t want to part with, go ahead and get new basic eating utensils. Start fresh in your new apartment! Buy a new welcome home mat while you’re at it.
Moving out of your old apartment into a new one is a kind of purging and cleansing process. Only take what you really need and get rid of what you don’t. This might mean letting go of some of those worn and weathered pieces you’ve held on to for so long, or depending on the size of your new digs, you might have some extra space to fill up! Take an inventory of what you will be bringing with you and decide what new furniture you will need – like tables, chairs, beds or couches. Get rid of all of the cardboard boxes. Buy plastic containers that can be used over and over again.
If you have not used it in the last year you probably do not need it. Donate it to someone who can use it.
Follow these six steps and you’ll be all set to move into your next New Orleans, Metairie or Kenner apartment rental at 1st Lake!
